Many of you have heard about the functions of honey, royal jelly and even bee wax. These are products from honey bees and they are good for health and skin. Actually, there is at least one more product form honey bees. Though propolis is less common compared to honey, royal jelly and bee wax, it is a luxurious supplement for skin.
Propolis is a resinous mixture of tree buds, sap flows, bee wax, pollen grains and secretions from honey bees. Propolis is composed of 55 percent resin and balsam, 30 percent bee wax, 10 percent essential oil and 5 percent pollen grains. Propolis contains 30 essential amino acids out of the known 38 essential amino acids. In addition, propolis inhibits the growth of many different bacteria, mold and protozoa.
Propolis is luxurious and has been proved to be good for skin and health. Propolis contains more than 50 different types of flavonoids. Flavonoid promotes skin health by facilitating blood circulation, decomposing pigments and preventing skin aging. Besides, propolis contains almost all kinds of vitamins, especially vitamin P (in rutin), which strengthen cell walls.
Resin is the most abundant component in propolis. Resin is largely made of collagen and elastin. About one third of the proteins in our body are collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are important substances in the growth of skin cells, blood vessels, muscles, bone and teeth. It also helps hydrate skin, facilitate collagen synthesis and rejuvenate skin cells.
Fatty acids and ester of high quality are the main components of Bee wax. Bee was is often included in skincare product because it has high efficacy in reducing wrinkles. Bee wax helps remove dead skin by reducing its attaching power to epidermis, leaving skin wrinkle, acne and pigment free.
Pollen is rich in protein, amino acid and fragrance. Protein is the essential substance for the growth and recovery of skin cells. Without protein, skin will be dry and inelastic and wounds will be different to be healed.
